Stompstock

So this is the Stompstock beta version.

It is intended for testing of the ….avols modules that I’ve written about before. Obviously I will write a longer text about this system when it is ready for intensive testing as a finished product, but for those who are interested I hope that these tiny posts about Stompstock is somewhat interesting and I will keep posting as new features gets implemented. On the list is preset morphing, mapping module for timed events, a granulation module and hardware. The hardware is on the drawing table, and will be there until I am sure it is flexible, scalable and has a splendid artwork.

Oh, and here is another module: The Playavols:

playavols_

The Playavols is a player for uncompressed audio files, and is as simple as it gets: You drop a file in the white region, hit the buttons to get it to play in a loop or just once. You can do pause and resume and off course play and stop. Playavols does not react to input signal but passes on the output from the module that is before it in the signal chain. The bypass switch mutes the audio file, but it keeps on playing in the background always ready to resound.

This is beta 0.5 of the AvolsFX-system

AvolsFX

AvolsFX

The AvolsFX are ready for beta testing (other testers than myself that is…). More modules will be available as they are finished, but these five are the starters. The sonic possibilities goes from nada (bypass) via subtle tremolo, delay, kompression and drive to complete madness. The ringmodulator can be anything but subtle, however capable of some very nice sounds.

There are so many things going on right now, and I am working on a project that occupy my daytime, so now as this system is ready for beta testing, it is a matter of bugfixing and polish before I put it out for anyone to get it. Pricing is still TBA.

The purple one: Ringavols

So this:

The ringmodulator!

is the Ringmodulator in the …..avols family. Think of it as a a meltingpot for a sinusoid: The modulation frequency is composite to get a mellower sound. It works! Audio example? No, not yet. I am still separated from my guitar’s better half, the amp. Please bear with me on this one… I guess you wouldn’t bring your dog to a catshow, and therefore I won’t record with a dog just because my cat isn’t at home. There is nothing wrong with my cat though. Short story shorter: I left my amp (the cat) at the place I am going to move to, and the moving thing was postponed.

By the end of November there will be audio!

The Driveavols!

The “My Screen is My Repatcher”-thing is coming together and the Driveavols is almost done:

I really like this drive. It growls at the low end, smoothes the middles and tames the treble. It is basically what I have wanted in my signalchain for a very long time. I’ll post audio examples along with those other modules when everything is finished at version 1.0. It will not be long now.

Operation: The gain controller goes from zero to noise and the cutoff balances the trebles. The volume keeps everything at the right side of too loud. I like it and use it on vocals as well. I like singing through this thing as the drive is easily controlled by the loudness of the voice.

Virtualization is the new loud in my host

I have hesitated the whole bootcamp thing because I did not want to reboot to get into Windows to find out that I have to reboot because I forgot something. Therefore, after Anders Tveit showed me his virtual world, I jumped on VirtualBox and took my Macbook with me. VirtualBox did not work with the CodeMeter dongle that Samplitude just have to have in its keyhole to get going.

Very well. There is no other reason than Samplitude and a few programming tools for the occasional MCU, for me to ever get into Windows nowadays so that was it for VirtualBox on my computer.

Then I installed VMware and everything was fine. VMware let me run Samplitude on Windows while checking email, skyping and surfing while programming Max/MSP tools for my Goldwasser on OS X. And performance seems to be good enough for me. Happy days until something comes up wrecking the horizon. Until then I enjoy my Samplitude and could not be less bothered. I really like this virtualization thing.

My screen is my re-patcher

Keep an eye at the text box in the patcher when the modules are moved around. That’s the explanation, and think about changing the order of stomp boxes on the floor.

This is a short demo of using the screen as a re-patcher. I use my computer for most effects processing in my guitar system, and this re-patcher allows me to change the effects order at any time without touching a cable. Changing the effects order should be easy to do for anyone because it creates a myriad of sonic possibilities. This is my approach to the challenge of re-patching on the fly, and I believe it will prove itself useful. Audio coming soon. I want to showcase all modules at the same time, and I am adding the possibility of serial, split to: parallell, merge to: serial processing as well. I don’t think I’ll need parallell processing but it should be possible to do it, shouldn’t it?

cheers

Guitar effects

Two new modules for my guitar setup has arrived at their beta stage: The Delavols and the Compavols. When those modules that are currently in the owen are all baked up and smells good, I’ll post some audio examples for anyone interested. Nice thing about using your computer as an effects processor is the lack of unwanted noise. If you still crawl around going mental on everything that is not as analog as the Wizard from Oz, then skip further down the internet and get exhausted for nothing. This is not your cup of tea.

New looks in max, new looks in my fauna

I am working on some modules for my guitar system. First of is a vibrato/tremolo with feedback through delay. And today I fiddled around with the presentation mode in a more or less finished patch to check out the new graphic objects. I frankly think that those new interface objects looks good. Well… I like it simple and here is the Vibravols module:

I’ve waited. Now I hover.

I guess I could write a love song about Max/MSP/Jitter. This fabulous software turned me into a music technologist, and I have used it for just about all my techno needs: GSM-communication, Ethernet, upload, download, my live guitar system, real-time audio and video, sensors, mapping und so weiter. Point is: I’ve got Max5, and I hover. Have not been so excited about software since I got Samplitude and discovered audio editing simplicity.

The new presentation mode is just a dream come through. And the inspector, and the new looks….. I think I like rounded corners.
